Dr. Shirley Jackson was the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT. She did so in the field of physics. Dr. Shirley Jackson also helped to invent caller ID, call waiting, the portable fax, the touch tone telephone, the solar cell, and fiber optic cables used to provide clarity in overseas telephone calls.
