Attorney Constance Baker Motley was the first African-American woman to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. She won this case, which allowed James Meredith to become the first Black student to attend the University of Mississippi.

Constance Motley was also the first African-American woman elected to the New York State Senate. She was elected in 1964.
