In addition to being one of the first African-Americans to be admitted to the American Bar Association, he also achieved these other firsts: One of the first African-American college football players, The first African-American in college football to be elected All-American, the first African-American to be appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney, the first to be appointed as one of the five United States Assistant Attorney Generals, writer of one of the first books on football tactics, Harvard’s first African-American team captain (football).

Like Martin Luther King Jr., William Lewis enrolled in college at the age of 15.
