Dr. Shirley Jackson was the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT. She did so in the field of physics. Dr. Shirley Jackson also helped to invent caller ID, call waiting, the portable fax, the touch tone telephone, the solar cell, and fiber optic cables used to provide clarity in overseas telephone calls.

Microbiologist Harold Amos earned his PhD from Harvard Medical School in 1952. He was a professor and he was the first African-American chair at Harvard Medical School. Mr. Amos was a Fulbright scholar and a presidential advisor to United States President Richard Nixon.
